CBD Safety & Benefits: Why It’s Taking Over the Wellness Industry

Understanding CBD and Its Legal Status

CBD has gained significant attention in the UK since its legalization in 2018. However, there is still some confusion surrounding its safety, largely due to concerns about THC content. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the compound responsible for the psychoactive effects commonly associated with cannabis. In Ireland, THC is illegal, which raises concerns for those considering CBD products.

At HempWell, our CBD products are completely free from THC, making them entirely legal and safe for consumption. According to HempWell Director Phil James, who oversees the extraction process, “We extract the CBD from the hemp flower biomass. The extract, which contain less than 0.2% THC (the legal limit in the hemp plant), then goes through a process called chromatography, where the THC is removed to non-detectable levels. We test this in the lab before shipping the final product to Ireland.”

Is CBD Safe According to Experts?

The World Health Organization (WHO) has deemed CBD as safe. In November 2017, the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD) concluded that CBD “does not appear to have abuse potential or cause harm.” Studies published in The New England Journal of Medicine further support this, showing that:

  • There is no evidence linking recreational CBD use to health problems.
  • CBD is widely regarded for its potential health benefits, including stress relief, improved sleep, reduced anxiety, and chronic pain management.

Are High Doses of CBD Safe?

One common concern is whether high doses of CBD are safe. While the recommended daily dose is 70mg, research suggests exceeding this amount it is not harmful as it is not possible to overdose on CBD.

HempWell offers oils with concentrations as high as 4000mg, delivering 133mg of CBD per 1ml dose. While this is nearly double the recommended amount, it is still considered completely safe. Research suggests minimal side effects, although some individuals have reported mild digestive discomfort, which is often attributed to other substances in the oil rather than the CBD itself. In rare cases, drowsiness has been reported when taking a strong dose without prior CBD tolerance.

Is CBD the Future?

Despite some ongoing debates about CBD’s legalization in Ireland, much of the skepticism stems from a lack of public awareness. Many experts believe that CBD has a long-term future in the food supplement industry because it offers numerous health benefits with virtually no side effects.

Some individuals using CBD for pain relief have even reduced their reliance on prescribed medications, such as morphine. Additionally, CBD’s versatility makes it valuable for various physical and mental health conditions, including:

  • Encouraging sleep for those with insomnia
  • Regulating mood in individuals with depression or anxiety
  • Enhancing motivation and focus

CBD is not just a trend; its wide-ranging benefits and safety profile suggest that it has the potential to become a staple in health and wellness. As research continues, the future of CBD looks promising, offering a natural alternative for those seeking effective relief with minimal risks.
