What actually is anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural, often beneficial response to stress or danger. It’s a complex reaction involving both emotional and physiological changes, which prepare the body for a “fight or flight” response. However, for many people, anxiety extends beyond these moments, becoming persistent and disruptive. This is classified as an anxiety disorder, when it consistently interferes with daily life.

UK anxiety statistics

  • Over 8 million people in the UK are experiencing an anxiety disorder at any one time (Mental Health UK)
  • Anxiety disorders are more common among young women aged 16 to 24 than any other group in England
  • An estimated 822,000 workers are affected by work-related stress, depression or anxiety every year (Health and Safety Executive)

When Anxiety Persists

Anxiety becomes a problem when the response stays switched on — persisting for weeks or months, out of proportion to any real threat, and starting to interfere with sleep, focus and everyday life.

Common types of anxiety disorders

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Excessive, hard-to-control worry about a wide range of everyday topics, often out of proportion to the situation. People with GAD tend to anticipate disaster around work, health, money or minor daily tasks.

Panic Disorder

Recurring, unexpected panic attacks: sudden episodes of intense fear or discomfort that peak within minutes and can arrive without warning, often with a sense of losing control.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)

An intense fear of social situations, especially unfamiliar ones or those where you feel watched or judged, sometimes strong enough to disrupt work and relationships.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Frequent intrusive thoughts and sensations (obsessions) that drive repetitive behaviours (compulsions), which can significantly interfere with daily life.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

A condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as an accident, assault or the sudden loss of a loved one.

How CBD helps with anxiety & low mood

To understand this, it’s important to first have a basic understanding of the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

For mood and emotional stability, the ECS plays an important role by interacting with chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine. When the ECS is disrupted, it can affect mood regulation and contribute to anxiety and depression.

The ECS, CBD and anxiety

CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (and other systems) by positively affecting the cannabinoid receptors, primarily CB1 and CB2 receptors.

CBD also prevents the breakdown of anandamide – a natural endocannabinoid – by inhibiting an enzyme called FAAH, which would otherwise degrade it. With higher levels of anandamide in the brain, people may experience enhanced feelings of well-being.

How CBD can help reduce your stress

CBD appears to influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a network that controls the body’s response to stress. This is the system that primarily regulates cortisol levels: when overactive, you feel more stressed.

Cortisol isn't always an enemy!

It’s an important signalling molecule for reacting to threat and danger. However, when the HPA axis is constantly high, this can result in an increase in anxiety as a result and lead to physical symptoms like increased heart rate and tense muscles.

The role of CBD?

By potentially reducing overactivity in the HPA axis, CBD may help the body adapt better to stress, easing both the mental and physical symptoms of anxiety.

Latest Research on Stress

A 2015 research study published in Neurotherapeutics suggests one way CBD may help reduce anxiety through the ECS by influencing serotonin receptors, specifically the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor. This receptor is closely involved in mood, anxiety, and emotional processing. By interacting with this receptor, CBD appears to boost serotonin activity, promoting a calming effect that may relieve feelings of anxiety.

A 2019 research study published in The Permanente Journal showed that CBD might help with sleep and anxiety. In the study, 72 adults with anxiety or sleep issues were given CBD daily. After a month, 79.2% of the participants reported decreased anxiety levels
